A 'Big Thank You' for Colin Tipton

The First meeting of Bedale Squash Club was held in Mch 1976 to form the club committee who would look to obtain grants and funding to finance the planning permission and construction of a squash court.

Colin was elected onto the Committee in April of the same year and immediately started representing Squash at BASA meetings on the Bar and Social Committee.

He was appointed Membership Secretary for our club in April 1977 in preparation of the completed squash court with 150 members and a waiting list.

The first court was completed Oct 1977 and the official opening in Jan of 1978.

It was decided to build another court in April 1978, which was completed in November, in order to service the 220 full members, 40 juniors and 50 day members (with 80 on the waiting list!)

During Mch 1980 it was decided to investigate building another court which was completed in 1982.

During the Squash Clubs development Colin stood along with 7 other committee members as guarantor for the required bank overdraft of £30k.

Over the years, Colin has been heavily involved with the Club. He has helped with and supported many social events over the years such as boxing nights, wine & cheese evenings, Dinner Dances, Car Treasure Hunts, and the annual tournaments. On one occasion there was an exhibition match when Jahangir Khan played at our club.

Over the years he has helped to organise decorating, court refurbishments, spring cleaning, and general repairs as needed to help the club run smoothly. Sometimes, even getting his hammer out to demonstrate his DIY skills !

He has run the membership records from April 1977. A total of 41 years…. Colin has welcomed many new members to squash and kept all the records in ‘Tip Top’ condition!

Throughout the years Colin has played for our teams in the North Yorkshire League and the Durham & Cleveland League and eventually in the veterans team!

One year he thought it would be a good idea to have an over 60’s competition in the tournament…………and managed to come home with a trophy !!

Colin, many thanks for all your hard work over the years and please accept this small gift in appreciation of your many years of dedication and commitment.
